Atheists: Is it hypocritical to say religion is dangerous but as silly as believing in fairies?

Can you have it both ways? If religion is responsible for countless lives over centuries, is it really like thinking tinker-bell is real? It seems to me something is either dangerous or silly, but rarely, if ever both. How do some Atheists marry the idea of something being horribly, irrefutably murderously dangerous and a funny, cute, fairytale character?
